Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a region full of innovative projects: it is the 5th largest European region in terms of expenditures in R&D. Rhône-Alpes is ranked number 9 within the European region concerning patent registration from both the public and the private sector. 

 14% of the French civil R&D is done in Rhône-Alpes. 3000 companies of all kind are grouped together into 12 "pôles de compétitivité" (competitiveness clusters) created  since 2004 and 12 business clusters. 

Due to the industrial and economic history of Rhône-Alpes, companies from the following sectors of activity are located in this region: chemistry, plastic manufacturing, drug manufacturing, agri-food, electronic and electric equipment, transport, sport and leisure, textile
